Walking home from coffee this morning at Bluebeard Coffee, I heard a familiar bird call from on top of a tree a few blocks from home.
“Quick! Three beers!”
No, this wasn’t coming from a customer at Hanks. It was an Olive-sided Flycatcher in the top of a tree somewhere between Sixth Avenue and the crest of the hill along Sheridan Street.
Hearing and then seeing this bird – the first of its kind that I have seen in this neighborhood – is a good reminder that nature is all around us, even here in the city. If only we would slow down and listen.
You can get a look at the Olive-sided Flycatcher on the Birdweb website and listen to its call.
